[GLAM] Will your attendees be creating accounts at your workshop/edit-a-thon/event?

If you expect people to create accounts on Wikipedia or other projects at
an event, please read this:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mass_account_creation#Requesting_temporary_lift_of_IP_cap

There are some automated anti-sock-puppet systems that prevent people from
creating multiple accounts on the same day from the same computer or IP
address. This can be a big problem if you have lots of new editors at a
workshop, and everyone tries to create an account.

You may be able to avoid this by asking attendees to create an account in
advance (but then they have to remember to do it, and to bring their
usernames and passwords to your event). Otherwise, your best bet is to
follow the directions on Meta about getting a temporary exemption for your
event.

Speaking as someone who regularly runs editathons and training events
in third-party venues, the "temporary exemption" suggestion is often
completely impractical.

Those of us who regularly undertake such outreach are awaiting the
feature we requested, over two years ago, to solve this issue:

No, wait. Over six years ago:

The ip account limit creates a great opportunity to gather usernames for
post event activity support, and evaluation by have a user with account
creation permission creating accounts form the moment people start arriving

bypassing the limit also opens up

temporary raising of
the limit also opens up
the ip to potential misuse especially in that time frame when no one is
monitoring the activity

I do that by making "leave me a message on my talk page" part of the training.
