[GLAM] [Image donation] 512 maps and images from the proceedings of the Dutch Parliament 1885-1995

Hi,

This might be interesting for those interested in Dutch (colonial) history: last week I did an donation of 512 maps and images from the proceedings of the Dutch Parliament (the so-called States General<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/en:States_General_of_the_Netherlands>. They are from the period 1885-1995.

The images are in Category:Media contributed by Tweede Kamer<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Media_contributed_by_Tweede_Kamer>. Every image has geo coordinates for the map centre.

The set has some unique content, not only about the Netherlands, but also about its former colonies Dutch East-Indies (now Indonesia) and Suriname. Themes include the Delta Works, polders, land reclamation and the construction of roads, railways, and ports.
To foster reuse, I started assigning thematic categories to some images, for example Eastern Scheldt<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Eastern_Scheldt>, Delta Works<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Delta_Works>, Canals in Friesland<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Canals_in_Friesland>, IJsselmeer<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:IJsselmeer> and Railway lines in the Netherlands<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Railway_lines_in_the_Netherlands>

Hi Olaf,

That looks like a nice collection of maps! I added a couple to the
Wikimaps Warper. See for example
https://warper.wmflabs.org/maps/221#Preview_tab .

For people who want to play around with the Warper too:
* Go to https://warper.wmflabs.org and login. Select Oauth Wikimedia Commons
* Go to
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Media_contributed_by_Tweede_Kamer
and pick a map
* Edit the source, change "| warped = " to "| warped = 1" and save it
* You'll now have a link "View the georeferenced map in the Wikimaps
Warper", click it
* Go to the "Rectify" tab
* You'll get two maps. On the left the old map, on the right the current
OpenStreetMap (https://warper.wmflabs.org/maps/221#Rectify_tab)
* Put a point on the same location on both maps (for example a city) and
click "Add Control Point"
* Do this for at least three points, but more is better. Try to spread
them around the map
* Click "Warp image" and wait
* Go to the "Preview" tab to see your work

Hi Maarten,

With my WMF programs hat on: Do we have ready case studies for how and why
partners have used the Warper? I have not seen mention of it anywhere in
our communications of GLAM-Wiki case studies/example projects.

It seems like the Warper tool would be perfect for outreach to a number of
organizations -- give them a reason to give us the community more maps, and
quite likely, we have one of the most open and easy to engage platforms for
doing this kind of work (I notice that the tool only has been used ~200
times). I would love to see a case study/ business discussion like
https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAM/Case_studies/Catalonia%27s_Network_of_Public_Libraries
or
